Why male elephant gets
affected by musth and why not in female elephant
Sir,
I am surprise see two articles one being titled as “Chronic fatique is a biological illness, not psychological” dated as 2-3-2015 and other one titled as “Depression is a physical ailment? dated as 6-1-2015 both had appeared in popular news paper in India called The Times of India. After reading these two articles I slowly got interested to write something on this Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and made a comment titled as “A solution for Mental Illness” which I emailed to ‘British Neuroscience Association’ on 8-4-2015 through Face-Book and also refer my Blog website titled as "How to eliminate depression in human - Part-I" displayed on 20-4-2015

Now, I would like to come up with some more facts since it is related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome arising from this physiological stress disrupts homeostasis of the body slowly become aggressive and changes the pattern of the neurons activity in pre-frontal cortex that affect, endocrine system as well as the central nervous system causing abnormal behaviour in some humans.
First and far most we have to correlate and understand from two aspects ‘why male elephants behave differently during musth and the female elephants do not get musth at all. The difference has to be analyzed from this anatomical structure of the male and that of female elephant and their appearances are almost similar except the pair of tusk in male comparably 7 times larger and weighs about 200 kg than the female elephant tusks is comparably small. Whereas male elephant trunk weighs about 181kg comparatively it is heavier than female trunk and the male looks taller than the female elephant and other than this they look the same. The heavier part of the trunk and the tusks and the pair of ears also weighs not less than 50kg all of them reach outside the forelegs of the animal and the stress is more on the head region for both of them. So why female elephant is not affected by this musth, whereas big difference of 60 times increase in testosterone level in male elephant. Further analysis shows female animal comes to heat at the age between 12 to 14 years. Whereas musth in male animal comes at the age between 16 to 18 years and above. When it being compared with female menstrual period normally starts for girls around 12 to 14 years and that of adolescent boys age is around 16 to 18 years time. Both humans and elephants have similar accomplishment even the average age is 60 years almost similar when compared among them. But when comparing female elephant’s head region the stress weight is more and it doesn’t cause musth in female whereas male gets it.
The reason lies here, when female elephant get pregnant the fetus start growing and the gestational period takes 23 month to give birth and the calf weighs is not less than 275 pounds to 300 pounds plays a counter balancing weight for the head region of the female elephant that naturally strengthens its nervous system. And every five years time when female animal get pregnant plays a vital role in counter balancing the weight against stress in female elephant’s head region, thus, avoiding musth in female elephants.
By comparing male elephant musth and human bipolar disorder including human depression episodes it clearly relates to physiological stress called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In this Chronic Fatigue Syndrome arises out of physiological stress influence cytokines to set off inflammation and that switches the brain into sick mood. Both cytokines and inflammation seemed to provoke depression episodes if not bipolar disorder. Basically, it is caused by these hanging hands which acts as dead weight purely clinging outside on either side of vertebral column doesn’t provide this counter balancing like in female elephants. And this is the reason that some women are affected by this bipolar disorder as well as depression episodes where it even affects men is mainly caused by this physiological stress stimulates these cytokines to infect pre-frontal cortex that changes the brain’s behaviour.
Further analysis also shows that male elephant undergo severe pains under physiological stress which makes temporal gland to swollen, and thereby temporin ducts ooze out this tar like substance on either side of the two eyes that provokes elderly male elephant to enter into more aggressive behaviour state. This aggressive behaviour in male elephant is triggered by the endocrine system that affects the temporal gland to swollen under the heavy increase of testosterone level which leads male elephant into musth during the winter season where it agitates the temporal glands especially in elderly male animals.
It is lot to do with the anatomical system of the body weight. Whereas elephant it’s a four legs animal and human is a two leg animal and both undergo severe stress while sitting as well as in standing position whereas in human hind legs knee bend towards backward like the elephant hind legs. Another analysis also shows the most common diseases are found in the human brain and not in other species or else manifest themselves in human brain in different ways which is actually being triggered by this dead weight of the two hands hanging outside on either side of the vertebral column where one hand tend to be stronger than the other hand that promotes for all kinds of diseases in human. In addition to this, the spinal cord has to bear the brunt in holding the body weight and the stress seemed to be affecting either directly or indirectly connecting the brain such as brain stem, amygdale, hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, pons, hippocampus and the central nervous system. Here, all of them are responsible for this severe stress in the body that stimulates the pituitary gland in releasing unwanted hormones into the blood stream through its neurotransmitters. Further, it weakens the pre-frontal cortex caused by this lazy hanging hands provoke this mental illness such as bipolar disorder if not depression episodes in some people. But whereas chimpanzees and monkeys their hands are very active and they are equally strong in both hands and they often climb trees by using their hands makes the nervous system more active and it hard wires the nerves in the nervous system especially in the pre-frontal cortex compared to human pre-frontal lobes. Further, this pre-frontal cortex when severely affected it leads to bipolar disorder which is caused by these cytokines and sets off the inflammation through its dead weight hands. And this the reason, monkeys, chimpanzees and even gorillas are free from this bipolar disorder.
